What Is RSS Feed And How To Use It?

By Benjamin Cip On August 23, 2009 Under Blogging tips, Wordpress

I’m writing this post for newbies who have no ideas about what is RSS and how to use it. No,I’m not talking about “Restriya Sambad Samiti”, “Ribbed Smoked Sheet” or “Royal Statistical Society” but RSS Feed that most bloggers and webmasters are using on their sites.

What does RSS means ?

RSS is the abbreviation for Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication. This is a format for delivering regularly changing web content. Most of websites and blogs syndicate their online content using RSS Feed.

Why Should I Use RSS ?

You use RSS to syndicate or subscribe to the feed of your favorite website, blog or other media content such as music, video or digital media. Thanks to this format, you don’t need to visit your favorite website to read the latest content. All you need to do is subscribing to the site RSS feed.

How To Subscribe To A Blog

You can subscribe to any blog you like. At the top right corner you can find an orange RSS link, this is my RSS link, and you can subscribe to my feed if you copy and paste that link into feed reading software or a web based reader like Google Reader or Bloglines. My RSS Feed link is feed://feeds.feedburner.com/benjamincip. You can also subscribe to my feed via Email if you want to receive my blog newsletter in your mailbox.

How Can I Create A RSS Feed On My Site ?

To create a RSS Feed on your site, all you need to do is going to the Feedburner site and create an account there, then follow the guidelines about how to insert a rss feed on your site. Once your Feed is ready, you’ll be able to analyze, optimize, plublicize and monetize your RSS feed.

Hope you found these informations helpful. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to email me using my contact form. Thank you for reading, and don’t forget to leave a comment.

I love RSS Feed because it can read all the posts in one page. However, normally I’ll subscribe the post via email subscribe link too if I find that the website/blog is providing good contents like yours. :)

This is a stupid I am sure – what do you do if someone is using your Feed address and putting it to there site ? Should you just consider this a compliment and hope their viewers enjoy your info ? I have read blogs where people are either disgusted by this or absolutely welcoming to this .. Whats your take ?

Hello ManiacHDIC, I never experienced such thing.. I don’t think it would be bad for me as it is my feed, and people would understand it by my feed name and info written inside. The only thing that could make me “disgusted” is if someone copy and paste my blog content… it happens many times because of automated content generator plugin, and I can’t do nothing against it.

Feedburner is great, but it does have its issues at times. On the whole though, RSS feeds are great. It just adds market segment of readers, which boosts your portfolio. It’s also great for auto-posting blog posts on Twitter. :)

You’re right Ben. I was told that sometime Feedburner can slow down your blog when you have too much readers…

A lot of people actually don’t know what RSS is, so I think making sure people are aware of it is really important.

Yes, I think it’s important to have such posts on your site. There will still be people who don’t know what is a RSS Feed, and that post will help them for sure.
